Hotel Review:
The Fairmont Beijing impressed from our first steps into the place. We booked a Fairmont Gold room as we had been impressed with the company’s offerings with this package during previous hotel stays. The deal included access to a lounge with regular food and drinks offerings and complimentary wifi access.
We were greeted by a impeccably attired staff member and then whisked up to the Level 20 check in. We were impressed by the polite personal greeting and the offer of a relaxed check in procedure in the Fairmont Gold Lounge. Staff were pleasant, polite and attentive with refreshingly good English skills.
Our room was on the 21st floor. The room was very well designed and gave a feeling of luxury and relaxation. The layout was very spacious and well appointed. The room featured a king bed, lounge setting and plenty of room for an extra child’s bed. The décor was modern, but reflected the local pastels of gold and dark wood.
The bathroom had a large window over the bath looking into the main room. A separate TV was mounted above the tub. A huge shower cubicle featured a rose gold shower and hand shower apparatus which was, in my opinion a bit ugly but very effective. The bathroom products were top quality.
There was a walk in wardrobe with plenty of drawers, hanging and suitcase space. A spacious desk was situated facing the view. A bose wave radio with ipod dock, nespresso machine, main TV, DVD and electric curtains provided adequate automation and gizmos.
The room was very well designed and gave a feeling of luxury and relaxation.
The gymnasium was modern with plenty of machines and a great view over Beijing streets. It lacked an upright bike, but otherwise was well done.
The pool provided a 20 meter stretch for lap swimming in a very pleasant setting. The change rooms and spa area seemed suitably luxurious.
The lobby bar mixed a mean spicy pear and apple sour martini and had good ambiance. The cut restaurant provided upmarket western steak and seafood at a price.
The only niggles were that the shampoo and soaps were heavily scented and tended to evoke skin irritation and drying in sensitive individuals. Bring your own supplies if you are prone to dermatitis.
The hotel is 5 minutes walk from both the LAN club and the Silk Market. A subway station is close by providing rapid access to essential sites in the city.
Over the stay we were impressed by the effortless ambiance of luxury created by the hotel in all areas. The staff were faultless in their execution of their duties. The décor, ambiance and quality oozed luxury without being cold or alienating.
During our stay we managed to hotel lobby and bar hop and got a feeling for some other establishments in Beijing. We remained pleased with our choice of the Fairmont as it felt modern, intimate and boutique. We found the Park Hyatt a bit sterile and impersonal with removed but crisp service. The Grand Hyatt had a great restaurant – Made in China – well worth a visit, but the hotel environment itself felt a bit large and adrift in a luxury brand shopping mall. The St. Regis seemed worth a look, but the overheated lobby put us off a stop for cocktails.
Consider the Fairmont for a faultless luxury experience with a boutique feel. |
